With a reading of guest artists: Yvette Teeuwen and Nina Boas

About:
Yvette Teeuwen: Performative jewel-like objects
In my live performances I work with the sensitivity of space, body, voicesounds and minimal bodily objects. In this partially interactive lecture there will be words, but even more images, an experience of you becoming visually part of the lecture and the art book ‘Performative Jewellery’ to hold in your hands.

The bodily objects I use
are like hairs
they are primordial
they naturally grow from within
they come with loads at the same time
they are like lines creating open forms
they express the Inner Deep
they are my second voice.

Nina Boas: Blurring reality’s and the imaginary world
In my early works I had been searching for ways to bring drawings to life and came up with the projection set where I did live drawing, projected life size where I would interact with the images (as if I was in my own drawings). I developed a video sampel projection setup at Steim in Amsterdam.
My projects are time- based and are with mix media (performance, live drawing, life-size projection and installations); blurring reality’s and the imaginary world with personal stories. I use these tools to express a layered narrative where I investigate issues such as the popular conception of the ‘woman’ (her position today), social structures, politics, and dreams. In a recent residency at het Huis in Utrecht I researched the aspect of moving objects without touching them and investigate the movement of the material.

Over:
Yvette Teeuwen: Performatieve juweel-achtige objecten

In Time! It is about experiencing the present moment, we offer a temporary respite at the hectic pace of our modern life and reflect on how we deal with our time.
It is rare for us to give ourselves the time to think about time as an idea in our daily lives,
as a structure that determines what we do, to consider that time is how we measure our success and our failures; time is the characteristic of both the beginning and the end of our lives.
Time can be considered, reconsidered, accumulated and broken down, return and being deleted.
Time can be approached in different ways: personal, methodical or scientific. With a poetic, practical, playful or meditative approach.
You can measure time by, for example; to look at material processes of growth and decay, with mechanical devices, through the mind, with the body, or regarding to specific actions. We are inspired by Marilyn Arsem; 100 Ways Considering Time. In which she spent a hundred days in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, together with the public, for a period of 6 hours, exploring the nature of time.

We laten ons hierbij inspireren door Marilyn Arsem; 100 Ways Considering Time. Waarbij ze honderd dagen 6 uur lang in het Museum of Fine Arts Boston samen met het publiek de aard van tijd onderzocht.

A two-day workshop by PAS | Performance Art Studies led by BBB Johannes Deimling in cooperation with P.S. – Performance Site, Den Hague, Netherlands

26. + 27. January 2019, 10:00 – 18:00
presentation 27th of January 15.30

Performance Art is considered as an artistic practice which is mainly in motion, where movement and actions are characteristic. Within the wide field of performance art one form is active since the 60s and perhaps not so much in focus of public recognition: The Still-Life Performance or the sculpture performance. Based on researches of sculpture this form is used throughout the times and played a distinct role in the development and the variety of performance art. One of the most inspirational quotes was made by James Lee Byars (1932-1997): “The perfect performance is to stand still”.

In the two-day workshop we will research and experiment with the idea of sculpture as a source for performance concepts and ideas. Still-Life Performance, Slowmotion Performance, Endurance Performance, Sculpture Performances are terms which will lead us into a field where we try to condense artistic ideas into one performance image, situation or moment. What is needed and important to make a performative sculpture and where are the possibilities and challenges are questions which we will address in the workshop time. How does space, material, time and as well action generate and condense a vivid artistic idea into one performance images, one performance moment? And how we can make use from the knowledge from Greek sculpture to contemporary positions? We will experiment with time and materials and see how far we can bring the idea of sculpture into performance art practice.

At the end of this research we will present the performance sculptures in a public event called “Sculpture Park” in which the audience is free to roam in space and discover the processes of the different sculptures. We will finish the workshop with a reflection.

As part of the workshop Jolanda Jansen will give an inspirational lecture which supports the made experiments and exercises.

The Poetic in performance art

June 25th till July 8th 2017, Quartair The Hague

International performance art event
A collaboration Between P.S. – IPA – PAS

IPA: http://www.ipapress.i-pa.org/
PAS: http://pas.bbbjohannesdeimling.de/index.php?/passtudies/2009/
Quartair The hague, Toussaintkade 55: http://www.quartair.nl/

This year the PS foundation collaborates with IPA – International Performance Art Association and PAS – Performance Art Studies on the topic of “the poetic in performance art”. The event runs for 12 days and includes one-week long workshops , live performances by both local and internationally renowned artists, premieres, talks, panel discussions, presentations and screenings.

Theme

P.S. – this is Live explores the poetic in performance art by interrogating: how can a performance artist approach the poetry of live action? How can we make something poetic visible? The quality of the topic you are interested in might be alluring, sensitive, soft or, on the contrary, heavy, dramatic and dark. At the same time, the poetry of the topic might be humorous and absurd, gloomy and obscure or light and ephemeral. You might explore different aspects of live action: rhythm, repetition, the symbolism of words, actions and objects. Your work can contain text or just an image/movement.

P.S. – this is Live is looking for artists with a personal approach and a sincere means of expression. A small intimate gesture is as valid as a big dramatic act. We are interested in the ideas that you can develop through time and the process of transforming thoughts into actions that have visual qualities. This can be achieved in many ways and it doesn’t matter through which means you choose to express yourself. We are up for objects, sound, light, technology or just bodies in space.

Poetry is a powerful artistic tool. It can be soft and fragile like a catkin but also brutal and destructive like a sledge hammer. Mainly the term ‘poetry’ is used within writing and is textually based. However, poetry  is also used as a metaphor to describe the appearance of an art work. The term ‘visual poetry’ describes the art which is dealing with text in an extended and visually extended manner. Similar to written or spoken poetry, ‘visual poetry’ creates spaces full of possibilities and playgrounds for thoughts. Therefore, all forms of poetry share the lack of not being applicable to reality as it has already transformed reality. Connecting the term ‘visual poetry’ with an ephemeral art form which is celebrating the ‘nowness’ of the moment in reality carries a huge potential towards the impossibility of creating poetry live. However, the term ‘visual poetry’ in connection with Performance Art is transformed into something different as live artistic actions can be poetic. This working method is anchored in the work of  Performance Art pioneers such as DADA and Fluxus. In doing so, the body of the artist is the sheet of paper on which the action writes its text and creates poetic moments. (BBB Johannes Deimling)

Content of the project

1- IPA and PAS week workshop conducted by Jürgen Fritz and BBB Johannes Deimling.
Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to follow a substantive performance art workshop in the Netherlands. Therefore, we are delighted to invite you to IPA – PAS.  An intensive week of masterclasses taught by the most prominent performance artists of today. IPA – PAS in the Netherlands is made for tenacious, true to their art and, preferably, experienced participants. During the full-time (7 hours) working days participants learn about performance, put their knowledge directly into practice and reflect on the process and outcomes afterwards.  Participants will also benefit from expanding their network by making valuable connections with other performers from all over the world. After four days the groups will change so the participants can benefit from both teachers.

Teachers:

BBB Johannes Deimling is an acclaimed visual artist and teacher, known for his specific visual approach to Performance Art based on his term agierte Bilder (enacted images). Besides his own art practice Deimling has devoted much of his practice in researching the educational potential of Performance Art. In 2008 he founded the independent art & education project PAS | Performance Art Studies attended by emerging artists from all over the world. In October 2017 he co-organizes with the University Dresden in Germany the international Performance Art Symposium ‘ACT.MOVE.PERFORM.’

2) Expanding the Hague performance art scene:

We invite 6 local artists that are already busy in the performance art scene and select 6 artist more through an open call. All this performers present their works during last-day presentation.

The open call is for every artist that can contribute to the topic of the poetic in performance.
We want to give a chance to everyone to showcase their work which means we will not take into account only your professional resume, but rather your proposal. We wish to celebrate diversity in the performance art scene of the Hague and contribute to its unique cultural environment.

3) Morning-after talks

Saturday and Sunday mornings will be dedicated to discussions around the topic of contemporary performance practice. These talks are also aimed at bringing closer the performer and the spectator. The performers will be given the opportunity to answer questions from interested parties or to enter into a discussion on certain issues which are raised. We want to give the public the possibility to elaborate on what they have experienced and the artists get some valuable feedback.

4) Bulletin

In order to collect valuable ideas and information a Thought Wall will be created. Everybody is welcome to join in: the residents, public, visitors etc. There will be some questions asked and people can put their answers/opinions/observations (in a textual or any other form) on the wall. At the end of the week they will be collected and an online publication will be made. The Thought Wall would become a valuable reference and a document for further discussion. It will also serve as an inspiration for the workshop participants as well as a bridge between the performers and the audience.
Examples of questions: What does it mean poetic? What should art be about? How should artists express themselves? What are the important ways of future development for the arts? What is poetry in art? What is the most important subject for performance art? How can art be expressed through the body? What is poetic creativity? What is imagination? What is creativity today in 2017 for you? …

5) Screening

There will be continuous screenings of the performance works by international artists during the opening hours of Quatair space. Anyone eager to know more about performance might come and watch the video works.

6) Children workshop

On the 6th of July there will be a workshop for children. See PAS Youth and more info later.

February 16 at 7:47pm ·

// 10 – 03 – 2017
The Hague Youth Factory, Torenstraat 140
// 19:00 – 23:00

An evening with a diverse range of performance art forms in an ongoing programme. An initiative of The Hague performance artists with a vibrating creative program, which is inspired by Fluxus, Dada, Body art, Electronic art, the street and everyday life.

[ P.S. wants to show Art that has a content with a deeper meaning, in terms of the subject but also in its representation. Art that triggers the mind. Performance art that is genuine and authentic, that has a visual quality in composition in relation to the environment and can be radical. We are interested in art that resonates in the mind and evokes different ideas. This can be done in many ways, and we exclude nothing: sound, light, technology, installations or nothing at all, just a body. ]
