In the live program Guidelines, new relationships between science and rituals in society are explored with performance art. In the past year, science has determined our actions more than ever. We base our behaviour, our rules and routines on statements by the OMT. From sneezing in the elbow to keeping your distance – science has never been more tangible in our lives. Our behavior is therefore increasingly determined by data. That which first determined our behavior—routine, regularity, and ritual—must clear the way for science.
At the same time, science also stimulates the imagination. For example, large groups of people do reenactments of historical battles and science fiction is a popular genre among writers and film makers. Activists such as Black Lives Matter and Extinction Rebelion also use science as a guideline in their protest. And well-known artists such as ORLAN, Stelarc and Cassils create works of art based on scientific knowledge and new technology. These movements in art and in society create new rituals, actions that question or, on the contrary, confirm our social identity. Perhaps science has been determining our actions for years?
In their work, ten performers explore how this influences our actions in general and our daily rituals in particular. They make visible how rituals arise and change through scientific insight. How do these relate to each other? What place does scientific knowledge occupy in everyday life? In other words; where is the boundary between science and ritual, and how do they influence each other today and in the future.
Performance at This Art Fair
For the upcoming edition of This Art Fair, P.S. Performance Site has been invited to put together a program for the fair. This part of the public program is also in line with our goals for the fringe programme. Performance events – organized by P.S. – showed that a diverse audience (in age, background, gender, etc.) is interested in this art form, without prior knowledge of the medium or the artist. This makes performance events easily accessible and P.S. appeals to the public who are less likely to visit a gallery or museum. This encourages P.S. to program in places where the flow of visitors is high and the threshold is low. This Art Fair is one such place.
The artists who will perform during the live program Guidelines are Nina Boas, Sarah Atzori, Cemre Kara, Jiaojiao Li, Jolanda Jansen, Kamila Wolszczak, Keeley Haftnerand, Kirsten Heshusius, Ronald Bal and Sól Ey. The artists mainly show site-specific performances.

ABOUT PROJECT ID IN-BETWEEN IDENTITIES

Stuart Hall outlines in the essay “Cultural Identity and Diaspora” (1990) that modern identities are no longer fixed but emerge as “unstable points of identification or suture, which are made within the discourses of history and culture.” In his words, life stories are not determined exclusively by class, race, gender, and religion, but instead there is a mixed ancestry; an identification with diversity in countries, traditions, values and beliefs. While the raised global interactions are causing a re-evaluation of traditions and lifestyles, an awareness of individual and collective change springs from the urgency to find new modes of shaping our identities and life stories. Performativity as a language calls for continuous transformation and functions as a form of social action, while contemporary performance art as a logical art form shapes, communicates, confirms and honours the value of differing life stories in multiple contexts.
As a result of Project ID – In Between Identities in The Hague, we cordially invite you for an interview with guest speaker Mohammed Al-Jaf, member of Humanity House in The Hague, and Hsiang-Yun, artist and theorist from Taiwan. Project ID In-Between Identities is a temporary creative community project aiming to face artistically the issue of the crisis of identity, working in performance art through personal and the societal conceptions of individuality. In a 10-days intensive Residency Class, P.s. Den Haag provides for a space to develop solo and collective performances under the tuition of artist duo VestAndPage together with Marilyn Arsem, to be presented during the weekend July 5 – 7, 2019 in a public event. A collective performance opera, solo and collaborative performances by the participants and additional invited international artists, as well as lectures and an exhibition, happen in the centre of The Hague at the former school building De Helena, Stichting Ruimtevaart, and De Barthkapel, a suggestive old convent chapel.
• The intensive Residency Class is tutored in a joint methodological process by VestAndPage and Marilyn Arsem • For the Residency Class, we are calling for a maximum of 20 international artists, performers, actors, movers, sound artists and poets interested in a collaborative and physical art practice, including all levels of experience and different abilities. • We are able to offer the Residency Class for the total costs of €450.-
This includes shared accommodation at The Hague Hostel and vegetarian meals during the period of the project (With arrival on June 24 and departure on July 8, 2019).

Artist Verena Stenke and artist and writer Andrea Pagnes have been working together since 2006 as VestAndPage, creating live performances, performance-based films, performance visuals, and poetic writings since over a decade, exploring performance art as phenomena through their collaborative creative practice, as well as through theoretical artistic research and temporary artistic community projects. Their art practice is contextual and situation-responsive, conceived psycho-geographically in response to social contexts, natural surroundings, historical sites, and architectures. In a “Poetics of Relations” they examine notions of temporalities, memory strata, communication and fragility of the individual and the collective within social and environmental spheres, applying the themes of trust in change, union, endurance, pain sublimation and risk-taking with a poetic bodily approach to art practice and a focus on universal human experiences. While encompassing a range of subtly different concepts, they primarily express VestAndPage’s view on reality while adding or revealing poetic elements as a rebellion against the exercise of power and discrimination among human beings. www.vest-and-page.de
Marilyn Arsem has been creating live events since 1975, from solo gallery performances to large-scale, site-specific works at festivals, conferences, alternative spaces, galleries, museums and universities in 29 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Thematically, her work has ranged from feminist deconstruction of images of traditional women’s work, to performances concerning the Cold War, to the impact of US imperialism in countries throughout the world, to works about environmental issues. The topic to which she has continually returned over the years has been our understanding of time, its passing, and mortality. She presented 100 Ways to Consider Time at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which was 100 different six-hour performances in 103 days, from November 9, 2015 to February 19, 2016. Over the years Arsem has experimented with different ways of designing performances so that audiences share responsibility in making the work. In some cases, the audience is given control over the actions of the performer, in other works the audience has taken a specific role in creating the event. This reflects an interest in redefining power structures and illuminating how meaning is generated and shared between people. She is a member and founder of Mobius, Inc., a Boston-based collaborative of interdisciplinary artists. She taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for 27 years, establishing one of the most extensive programs internationally in visually-based performance art. www.marilynarsem.net

Project ID is a temporary creative community working with global
issues of ‘identity Crisis’. Together with VestAndPage we will create a
visual save space to create live solo and group performances. Marilyn
Arsem will be our guest artist working with VestAndPage
on the project.
From the investigation of the notion of ‘identity
crisis’ in our social systems, our urgency is to identify new life
perspectives collectively through art and performance art making
The aim is to stimulate and intertwine proactive dialogues among
artists, people, and cultural communities in general, considering art as
a foremost sensitizing tool of communication.
Our mission is therefore to favour independent, temporarily binding
relationships among artists, people and different cultural communities,
which can lead to long-term networks existing, growing and lasting even
after the conclusion of the project itself.

Art is considered as an artistic practice which is mainly in motion,
where movement and actions are characteristic. Within the wide field of
performance art one form is active since the 60s and perhaps not so much
in focus of public recognition: The Still-Life Performance or the
sculpture performance. Based on researches of sculpture this form is
used throughout the times and played a distinct role in the development
and the variety of performance art. One of the most inspirational quotes
was made by James Lee Byars (1932-1997): “The perfect performance is to

experiment with the idea of sculpture as a source for performance
concepts and ideas. Still-Life Performance, Slowmotion Performance,
Endurance Performance, Sculpture Performances are terms which will lead
us into a field where we try to condense artistic ideas into one
performance image, situation or moment. What is needed and important to
make a performative sculpture and where are the possibilities and
challenges are questions which we will address in the workshop time. How
does space, material, time and as well action generate and condense a
vivid artistic idea into one performance images, one performance moment?
And how we can make use from the knowledge from Greek sculpture to
contemporary positions? We will experiment with time and materials and
see how far we can bring the idea of sculpture into performance art
